During my time at Clemson University I was able to complete an internship at Clemson-Seneca Pediatrics. Through this internship I was able to receive hands on experience in a medical setting and learn more about the career path I wish to pursue. Below is an account of my time spent at the pediatric office presented in powerpoint presentation, completed projects, and a reflection on my time spent there.

Projects

I completed various projects during my time at CSP. Below are some of the projects and their descriptions.

Sun Protection Poster

One project I completed was to update the poster that hung in the patient area of the back office. Patients and their parents would see the poster on their way to and from their exam rooms. When I started my internship the poster presented flu education. However, now that it was no longer flu season, I was asked to revise the poster to reflect necessary sun protection during the summer months. The poster is in place to educate and inform parents of proper sun protection for their children.

Front Office

When I arrived at CSP there was a shelving unit in the front office for organizing paper charts. However, because the charts are now electronic, it was not being used and instead was just taking up space. I decided to take down the shelving and put up something more useful in its place. After removing the shelving unit, I painted the wall with chalkboard paint and painted on a permanent calendar, something the office needed. This remodel opened up the front office and allows for more practical use.

Final Thoughts

This paper and the accompanying powerpoint below are a personal reflection and evaluation of my time spent at CSP, and how the internship impacted my education and further pursuit of a medical career.

Public Health Determinants and Trends

This paper was written for my Health Science Internship exploring public health determinants and trends, organizational behavior and governance, and professionalism in regards to my internship at Clemson-Seneca Pediatrics.

Sample Medicine Cabinet

It was office policy that each week someone would go through the sample medicine cabinet to check the expiration dates on all the medications. When I began my internship this job was passed along to me. Each week I would check the expiration dates on single and multi-use medications. If a multi-use medication had been opened, it would have to be discarded after 28 days. If a medication was expired I would log it into the expired medication log in order for new medication to be ordered.

Vaccination Reorders and Organization

Each month the office would place a vaccination reorder to restock the vaccines we were running low on. To do this we would have to write down how many of each vaccination we had and each vaccinations lot number. Using this information we would request a new number of vaccines and GHS would determine if we received new ones. I would help the other nurses complete the vaccination reorder form, as well as reorganize the refrigerator when a new order of medication came in.

While I was at CSP the office was getting ready for a CLIA inspection. I was assigned to review all of the patient records in the lab books for the past three years. My job was to go back through the books, flag any holes in patient or provider information, and then enter the correct information according to the patient’s electronic chart. For patients with missing information I would have to go back into their chart to cross-reference the information from the lab book in order to enter the correct information.
